Lake Havasu City, home of the historic London Bridge, is on the east shore of Lake Havasu on the Colorado River border of California and Arizona. The opening of the London Bridge in October 1971 by McCulloch Properties, Inc. brought a unique attraction to Lake Havasu City. The Bridge has been reconstructed over the a channel off Lake Havasu and an English village replica built next to it. McCulloch Properties, Inc. established the town in 1963 as a self-sufficient, planned community. It is the major population center of southern Mohave County, one of the fastest growing counties in the United States.

PRINCIPAL ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES

Lake Havasu City attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to its calm waters and beautiful beaches. The London Bridge and its adjacent English Village are the focal point of a multimillion dollar resort complex of shops, restaurants and lodging facilities. A million visitors bring $100 million annually to the economy. A wide range of manufacturing industries also contribute significantly to the economy.

SCENIC ATTRACTIONS

Lake Havasu, formed by Parker Dam on the Colorado River, offers abundant attractions. The deep blue water, with its coves and inlets, makes the lake a good fishing spot. The city hosts a number of major bass competitions throughout the year. Open stretches of water are the scene of annual national outboard championships, sailing competitions, water skiing and international jet ski championships. Early mines and mining towns are scattered in the desert to the north and east. Lake Havasu State Park and Lake Havasu National Wildlife Refuge provide areas of rugged terrain where birds and small game flourish. COMMUNITY FACILITIES

Lake Havasu City offers a broad range of community facilities including four parks, one movie theater, a library, three beaches, a bowling alley and four golf courses. Also, there are state and commercially operated recreational facilities that include a marina, campsites, picnic grounds, RV parks, boat slips, dry storage, boat repair, boat and watercraft rentals, lake tours, swimming beaches, and fishing areas. RETAIL SALES TAX

Arizona has a 6.6% state sales tax, exempting food and drugs. Mohave County imposes a 0.25% tax. Lake Havasu City imposes a 2% sales tax, a transient rental bed tax of 3%, and a 1% restaurant and bar tax.

EDUCATIONAL

Lake Havasu City has six elementary schools, two middle schools, two high schools, charter schools and private schools. Mohave Community College, 1977 W Acoma Blvd (928) 855-7812, operates a full campus. There are also several state certified preschools.

Northern Arizona University, 1977 W Acoma Blvd (928) 680-5962, in partnership with Mohave Community College, offers residents the opportunity to obtain a bachelor’s or master’s degree without leaving the area. The state wide Partnership Plan, a agreement between NAU and community colleges throughout the state, in which the community college provides the first two years of a degree program and NAU provides the upper division courses to complete the degree, makes the University program possible.

Courses are available on-site through NAU’s interactive Instructional Television System, and over the web. Mohave Community College also partners with other Universities to offer more educational opportunities. » back to top

MEDICAL

The local hospital is the Havasu Regional Medical Center. This 138-bed facility is certified for Medicare and is JCAHO accredited. The hospital provides 24-hour emergency service with full-time emergency physicians on duty. More then 100 affiliated physicians comprise the medical staff, representing a broad cross-section of specialty areas. Havasu Regional Medical Center offers a full compliment of patient centered, community hospital and regional referral services in all major medical disciplines.

Other major facilities available are the Havasu Surgery Center and Midwest Internal Medicine. MIM has the capability of performing comprehensive diagnostic studies on premise. With state of the art equipment this facility offers a variety of test such as, bone density scans, ultrasound technology for abdominal and pelvic studies, echocardiography and carotid studies, x-rays, EKG’s, pulmonary function studies, all test and lab work are done in a timely manner. Midwest Internal Medicine has physicians specializing in; Internal medicine, Neurology, Pulmonary/Allergy, Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Cardiology, and Rheumatology along with Family Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants. COMMUNICATIONS

In addition to communication resources from the rest of the state, Lake Havasu City has a daily newspaper, Today’s News-Herald, several radio stations and television stations. There are several financial institutions with branch locations throughout Lake Havasu City.
